Why this matters

Platform moderation relies heavily on user reports to surface content for review, so harmful material often stays up simply because everyone who saw it scrolled on. Reporting takes seconds and is one of the few direct levers ordinary users have. The people targeted by harassment are usually left to report it themselves, which is exhausting and puts the burden in the wrong place.

How to do it

When you come across content that clearly breaches a platform's rules - targeted harassment, threats, scams, or demonstrably false claims about health or safety - use the report function instead of arguing with it or moving on.

How to do it effectively: - Pick the right report category. Reports filed under the wrong reason are far more likely to be dismissed. - Report the specific post or comment rather than the whole account, unless the account itself is the problem. - Don't reply, quote or share it, even to criticise. Engagement of any kind pushes it to more people. Report and mute. - Scams targeting older or vulnerable people are worth reporting to your national fraud reporting body as well as the platform.

A few honest caveats: - Reporting is imperfect. Plenty of reports go nowhere, and reporting isn't a substitute for platforms doing their job. - Don't report things simply because you disagree with them. Mass-reporting legitimate opinions is itself a form of harassment, and it degrades the system for everyone. - Stick to clear rule breaches - things that are threatening, deceptive, or dangerous - rather than political positions you dislike.

If a friend is being targeted, offering to do the reporting for them is genuinely useful. Doing it yourself when you're the target is draining.
