Why this matters
Access to credit is the bottleneck for a lot of small businesses in low-income countries - not ability or demand, just the inability to borrow a few hundred pounds at a sane rate. A small interest-free loan can cover stock, equipment or school fees. And because loans get repaid, the same money can be lent again and again.
How to do it
Gather for dinner and set up (or log into) a shared Kiva account. Connect a laptop to a TV or projector so everyone can browse together rather than crowding round a screen.
Read through a few profiles and pick someone or something you can all get behind. The discussion is genuinely the good part - people pick very different things and explain why.
Once the loan is repaid, you get the money back into the account and can lend it again. Set a reminder to revisit it in six months and pick the next one. That's what turns this into a recurring thing rather than a one-off.
An important note: lending on Kiva carries real risk, and you may not get the full amount back. Default rates are low but not zero. Pick an amount everyone in the group is genuinely happy to commit without expecting it back - treat it as a donation that might return, rather than an investment.
Worth being clear-eyed about the model too. Microfinance has real critics, and it isn't a fix for structural poverty. It's a useful thing you can do together, not a solution to anything on its own.
