Why this matters

General clothing drives collect a lot of the wrong things - shelters end up with dozens of size-S summer dresses and no men's socks or warm coats. Donating against a live needs list means everything arrives usable. It also costs nothing, since most of it is already sitting unworn in your wardrobe.

How to do it

Many local shelters publish exactly what they need right now. Find that list first - it changes with the seasons and with who they're currently housing.

Share the list in your WhatsApp group with friends or colleagues and have everyone check what they've got at home that matches. Then get together, put music on, have snacks, and go through it properly.

Things worth knowing: - Socks and underwear are almost always the most-needed and least-donated items. New only, for obvious reasons. - Wash everything first and don't donate anything you wouldn't wear yourself. Shelters spend real time disposing of unusable donations. - Sturdy shoes, warm coats and waterproofs are usually in short supply in winter. - Check drop-off times before you go. Many places can only accept donations in specific windows.

While you're there, see if you can meet some of the people who work there, hear about what they do, and ask whether there are other things they're short of.

And if during the closet raid you find clothes you no longer wear but a friend would like, give them a second life inside the group. Nothing needs to go to landfill.
