Why this matters

Survival in a cardiac arrest drops sharply for every minute without CPR, and ambulances almost never arrive inside that window. The person who makes the difference is whoever happens to be standing there. Most people never learn what to do, freeze, and later wish they had. This is one of the few skills where a single afternoon might genuinely mean someone lives.

How to do it

Find and register for a local first aid or CPR course as a pair or group. Many areas run free or heavily subsidised community sessions through ambulance services, the Red Cross, St John Ambulance or local councils - check those before paying for a private course.

You don't need a full workplace certification unless you want one. A short community CPR and basic life support session covers the things that actually matter: recognising cardiac arrest, chest compressions, using a defibrillator, the recovery position, choking.

Get the most out of it: - Actually do the drills rather than watching. Compressions are far harder physical work than people expect, and knowing that in advance matters. - Ask where the nearest public defibrillators are to where you live and work. Most people have no idea, and it's the single most useful thing to walk away knowing. - Ask about children specifically if that's relevant to you - the technique is different.

Then go for a drink and quiz each other on the way home. Skills like this fade fast, so talking it through immediately afterwards genuinely helps it stick. Set a reminder to refresh in a couple of years.
