Why this matters
Street vendors often stand out for hours waiting to sell the last of their stock, and whatever doesn't sell is frequently thrown away. Clearing them out early gives someone their evening back and stops good food going to waste. If you pass the surplus on to people who need it, one purchase does three useful things at once.
How to do it
Are you hanging out in a large group, running an event with colleagues, or otherwise need a lot of food anyway? Use the opportunity to buy from the same place and clear out everything they have left for the day.
How it works in practice: find a food truck or street vendor near the end of their shift, ask what they have left, and offer to take all of it. Agree a fair price - don't push for a discount just because you're buying in bulk. The point isn't a bargain.
The benefits stack up: - The person working the truck can call it a day early and go home to their family or run errands. - Unsold food often goes to waste, so you're making sure it gets eaten. - You can choose to give some or all of it away - to people sleeping rough, night-shift workers, or just to pay forward a meal for strangers.
If you are handing food to people on the street, offer rather than assume, keep it low-key, and don't photograph anyone. Ask if they'd like it. Some people have allergies, dietary or religious restrictions, or simply don't want to be approached, and that's fine.
